Kathy's Corner: This is my week for venting about the every increasing price of gas. I don't understand how the price can be $3.89 a gallon at one gas station but if you drive a mile down the road it's $3.49 a gallon. I do understand the whole middle man concept but let's get real about this. Why is it that before every holiday, Spring break or Summer vacation the price of gas takes a huge leap upward?? You can't tell me that the price of a barrel of oil conveniently jumps up before every one of the above mentioned events. What about the people that are working in minimum wage jobs? They barely have enough money to put gas in the car to get back in forth to work and then they have to pay bills and if they're very lucky eat if there's any money left for food. Don't think for one minute that all of the people working at minimum wage jobs are the uneducated poor. There are plenty of people with college degrees working at minimum wage jobs because they've been laid off from their high paying jobs and no one is hiring in their field. That was always the American Dream, what we tell our children, get a good education, work hard at your job and you can have a good life.  Now it's get a good education but make sure it's in a field that will always have jobs and then, sorry but there's no guarantee that after you spend $250,000 on your education that you will find a job that will even repay the student loans!! Okay, I'm getting off topic here, back to the gas. If you want to do something about it I found a couple of great websites that can help. The 1st is a site that allows you to see who has the lowest price gas in your area for that day, you can find it at http://www.gasbuddy.com/. The second is the Department of Energy, you can report suspected price fixing/gouging  at their site http://gaswatch.energy.gov/ . Just maybe if we all start finding the lowest price station each day and spend the extra five minutes to drive there instead of just getting gas at the closest station because it's easier the other stations will be forced to lower their prices, it's worth a shot!
